Ibogaine is a chemical substance with habit interruption
properties, extracted from a tree that grows naturally
in Central West Africa. It has been used for many centuries by certain
cultures in their initiation ceremonies for the initiates to
get closer to their ancestors. More recently, it was “discovered” by
hippies in the 60’s, who were pursuing the hallucinogenic
effects of the substance. They discovered that, after
ingesting it, the withdrawal symptoms of opiate (Opium derivatives
like Heroin, Morphine, pain killers, etc) addiction disappeared
and cravings were absent for a lengthy period of time. This
lead to a drive for financing to research the substance in
the US, but a lack of interest by pharmaceutical companies,
had the substance under constant financial pressure, so that
development was never fully realized and the substance never
registered as a medicine. It has been, however, approved
for research in the US and elsewhere and a tremendous
amount of research has been done to date by various groups
in amongst other countries, USA (University of Miami), Mexico,
UK, Mexico and Holland.
Ibogaine is metabolized in the liver to Noribogaine, an active
metabolite, and the combined actives have its effects in the
body for a prolonged period of time.
Reasons for the disinterest in the substance are many, most
noticeably that the substance is used only once or twice by
a patient for it to be effective and permanent, thus the potential
return on investment by the companies would not warrant the
financial input.
Over the past two decades, it has
been used informally and later in a clinical environment in
many countries. Currently
facilities can be found in South Africa, Mexico, Holland, Slovenia
and elsewhere, where it is used with three main objectives in
mind: Firstly, it causes introspection, with the mind
sometimes traveling back in time into childhood without situations
being experienced as threatening. This gives the user
the opportunity to gain awareness of him/herself. Secondly,
it can be used for increased awareness of oneself on a higher
spiritual level. Thirdly, it causes a reduction of withdrawal
symptoms and cravings for drugs like Heroin, Methadone, Nicotine,
Amphetamines, Cocaine, Crack and Alcohol, by acting on the receptors
in the brain that are responsible for cravings and withdrawals. The
exact mechanism of action is still under investigation, except
for alcohol cravings and withdrawals, for which the mechanism
has been described to satisfaction through research. It
has been found not to be especially effective for Benzodiazepine
type of addiction, other than offering better insight into the
origin and nature of the addiction. As time passes and
research is done, more and more becomes known of it’s
mechanism of action, and it’s unique way of acting on
the body.
What ones’ purpose for using
it would be, remains a private issue, and it is recommended
that once the decision has been taken to participate in the
experience, each person must set clear (Spiritual) goals to
him/herself so that one can concentrate on these goals and
not sit with too many issues to process once the processing
phase has started.
Ibogaine has no addiction potential
and is not used recreationally. The
reason is that it does not enhance one’s social capabilities
while using it – It has never attracted joy riders. It
also causes nausea and vomiting and some other unpleasant
side-effects with some users.
It has been established to be safe
(Only ¼ of the dose
that can cause damage to certain parts of the brain is necessary
to interrupt addiction), except for individuals with certain
medical conditions.
To safeguard potential participants,
medical tests are mandatory prior to acceptance of any person
for treatment. These
tests are specified in the next paragraph, or details can be
obtained from us per telephone. Results must be submitted
to us on admittance.
Ibogaine is used as a mixture of different alkaloids, or
as a pure extract, converted to the Hydrochloride salt. Extensive
research has been done by us before a reliable supplier has
been identified. We use the purest available grade, weighed
out per patient according to body weight.
